Budgie formed from glass, drawn in shades of blue.
My Grandma kept budgies when we were wee. Only ever one or two at a time. I feel bad about that now, knowing they are social creatures, living in flocks. However, whenever we went round, I’d sit and talk to them, and as they became bolder, they’d start to talk back.
They had free-flight of her top floor Edinburgh tenement sitting room. My grandma put little foil trays under their favourite perches. Nicky was my favourite – he (we presumed he was a he) was green and yellow. We would go out to pick ‘Nicky’s grass’ for him to nibble on. I still call it ‘Nicky’s grass’ to this day.
We were having a wee Freddie VW camper van stop over in Broughty Ferry, near Dundee, after dropping Ronan off one time. I was absolutely delighted to find the glass budgie in the Oxfam charity shop for £3.99. He was carefully parcelled up and kept safely out of harms way until we got home. He now flies freely in my bathroom. I think he likes it there.
